Distillate fuels such as gas oil can degrade over time. This is especially the case when left in storage tanks for prolonged periods such as when gas oil is being stored for occasional use in standby generators or boilers.

Water build up, primarily via condensation can commonly be found in suspension within the fuel and as 'free water' build up at the bottom of the tank. This build-up of free water is the catalyst for more problems.

Distillate fuels do contain bacteria and this is becoming more common given the increasing use of biofuel into mainstream refinery products. These microorganisms, combined with water create a sludge in the storage tank which is commonly referred to as 'bug'. 

 

This sludge or bug can be drawn from the tank, down the fuel lines into the combustion system. This can cause ignition problems and/or burner drop out during combustion.
